Ireland Trip
I went on a trip to Ireland at the end of May, 2006. I landed at Shannon Airport at 3am est or 8am gmt, then took a bus to Doolin, and hiked the trail that runs just feet from the dangerous Cliffs of Moher. I also trekked along the Burren, a very rocky coast with sheep pastures, surrounded by many rock walls carving the treeless landscape into small parcels.

I took a ferry from Doolin Harbor to the island of Inishere, the smallest of the 3 islands. The other islands are called Inishmaan, which is the 2nd largest, and Inishmore, the largest of the 3 Aran Islands. On Inishere, I hiked to a stranded boat and a lighthouse, climbing over many stone walls that lined the landscape. Stone walls are a common sight as there are few trees left in Ireland and lots of rocks. After taking a ferry from there to Inishmore, I visited Dún Aengus. The next day I took another ferry from Dún Aengus to Rossaveal, and then a bus from there to Galway, where I stayed at the very hightech Sleepzone hostel. I then took a ferry to Inishbofin, where I stayed in a small hostel, the only one on the island.

Inishbofin is a small island, it has a small dock, a helipad, a few paved roads (the rest are either gravel, 2 dirt tracks, or nothing at all), and a few small cars. Most of the cars are very old and run down. There's no reason to keep them in tip-top shape because there are so few roads to travel on anyway and that the island can easily be crossed on foot. After taking a ferry from Inishbofin back to the mainland, I took a bus from there to a town right outside Connemara National Park. Then took a bus to Clifden and checked out an awesome castle.

Doolin Road

Cliffs of Mohr
The main road through the small town of Doolin. Beyond the hill is the Cliffs of Moher and the Atlantic Ocean.

Allie River Hostel. A very nice hostel run by a cool guy named Karl. The Allie river runs under this very old bridge.

The Cliffs of Moher are visible in the distance along with a waterfall. The picture below shows the top of this waterfall.
Burren Trail
Burren Rock

Cliffs of Moher
The very rocky Burren coast. At high tide this is completely covered. Picture taken at low tide.

A large freestanding rock on The Burren.   A valley along the Cliffs of Moher, with a small creek that ends in a waterfall cascading into the ocean.

Cliffs of Moher Gate
Cliffs of Moher Bay

Cliffs of Moher Steep Cliff
"Very Dangerous Cliffs ahead". At parts of the trail there are few precious feet from the edge, a drop of 702 feet at the highest point.

Rough waters off the Cliffs of Moher. Doolin harbor is to the left on the other side of the hill.

A very steep cliff with Doolin in the far distance. I hiked all the way from Doolin to O'Brien's Tower. This picture is taken inches from a sheer drop.
Cliffs of Moher Sign
Inisheer Castle

Inisheer Sunset
"Extreme Danger, cliff falls continuing". A sudden slip or mistake is sure death. I passed both warning signs with a shrug.

Stone walls line the path to one of the 2 castles on Inisheer.   Beautiful Inisheer sunset looking to the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the islands houses are visible in this picture.

Inisheer Boat
Inisheer Shore

Inisheer Lighthouse
Rusted out boat stranded for over 50 years during a bad storm.

A miniature beach along a rocky coast. The Cliffs of Moher are visible in the background.   Most of the roads on Inisheer are like this one, aside from the few paved ones near the town center.
Inisheer Beach
Inishmore Sign

Inishmore Cliff
The only dock and beach on Inisheer. Everything is brought onto this island via the dock and the small Airstrip.

Inishmore, Dún Aengus, miniature house shows the way. Behind the sign is the Atlantic.   Lovely view of the Atlantic looking west (you can almost see New York).

Galway Downtown
Inishbofin Road

Inishbofin Car
Galway, one of the larger cities on the Western side of Ireland.   Roads like these wind through Inishbofin. They are very narrow, even for a little car.   Towards the north sits a rusted out car on Inishbofin. Like Inisheer, there are very few cars.

Inishbofin Memorial
Inishbofin Bay

Inishbofin Beach
The small island in the distance is cut off from the shore at high tide. 2 people were stranded there and died on the stags.

Inishbofin harbor shown. This is one of the best deep Harbors on the West Coast of Ireland.   A very nice beach, a rarity for this area of Ireland.
Inishbofin Water
Diamond Mountain
  Clifden Castle
Very clear water along the Inishbofin shore, where much of the area remains untouched.
Very top of Diamond Mountain in Connemara National Park.   Partially standing castle located in Clifden.
