Game: Uplink
review by Frinkruds, May 30 2003, 5:55pm EST

You play an Uplink Agent who makes a living by performing jobs for major corporations. Your tasks involve hacking into rival computer systems, stealing research data, sabotaging other companies, laundering money, erasing evidence, or framing innocent people. It will take you to the darker corners of the Internet, to the very underbelly of the beast.

You use the money you earn to upgrade your computer systems, and to buy new software and tools. As your experience level increases you find that more dangerous and profitable missions become available.

You can speculate on a fully working stock market (and even influence its outcome). You can modify peoples academic or criminal records. You can divert money from bank transfers into your own accounts. You can even take part in the construction of the most deadly computer virus ever designed.

At the beginning, you basically do the same missions over and over again for a little bit, so to some players it might be boring. The bad thing about this is that some might give up before really getting in to the core of the game. So my advice is to stick in for a bit and ease on into the game.

The game sounds are great also, they go with the game and enchant it. One of the woes with this game is that you can't separately change the sound and music controls, you can only turn both off or both on. While the sound and music levels are pretty well balanced, some may still want the choice of one or the other. (As with 1.3.2 this has been fixed.)

One other thing bad about this game is the bugs. But lucky they will be fixed eventually once Ambrosia releases patches. Mostly, the bugs aren't big and don't cause disruption of the game its self. (As with 1.3.2 the bugs have been reduced.)

All in all, the game is a one and only. I have found no other game that is as enjoyable as uplink and conveys the feeling of reality. While some problems hinder its performance, the game definitely lives up to its incredible name.
