Game: Spyhunter
review by Frinkruds, Jun 5 2003, 11:46pm EST

The evil NOSTRA corporation prepares to unleash havoc on the world, and only the SpyHunter is equipped to stop them. Strapped behind the wheel of the powerful G-6155 Interceptor, you are the world1s last chance! Utilizing an incredible arsenal of both offensive and defensive weapons, you must elude NOSTRA spies, henchmen and assassins at any cost if civilization is to be saved. Prepare to be hunted!

This game is a mix between good and bad. The game has bugs and in that respect is quite annoying. The graphics and game play is awesome though, and worth every second, as the same with the missions.

The good:
Now about the graphics. These graphics are amazing, they are just so good. It pretty much pays for the game. I had the bad luck of having a old computer with a old graphics card which really sucked. So if you want to really enjoy these graphics your going to need a pretty new computer with a great graphics card.
In the graphics, you can see every detail from tire skids to lasers scaring your vehicle.

As for the missions; they missions are no different from the PS2 versions therefore I see no point in reviewing them as you can already find reviews of them in previous articles.

The bad:
Every time you start up the game it resets the system performance prefs. The prefs for the joystick/keyboard are saved though. You may have problems getting your joystick to work properly with spyhunter, therefore I suggest you download USB Overdrive. When setting up for the keyboard, it gets even more annoying. You cannot use the command key, or any keys that aren't compatible/work on windows. Even worse is when you assign keys, the key name shows up as the windows name. For instance alt instead of option. These poor key limitations make the game very frustrating and hard for no reason. So I suggest you get a joystick. Gravis Eliminators GamePad Pro did the job fine, once I downloaded USB Overdrive.

When navigating the menus, things get even more confusing. For example, when I beat/lose a level it brings up two things. If you want to restart the game and play the level again, you must press "delete". To exit to the main menu, you must press "enter". This makes no sense, say if you want to restart the game wouldn't you normally enter it again? How about exiting to the main menu? Why not make that escape? These bad choices results in slip-ups and annoyances.

When selecting menus sometimes, things get locked up and the selection goes up or down very fast out of control. The only way to fix this is to quit the game or just hope you press the right button at the right time.

Another problem I have is with the mouse, you cannot use it at all. It would be nice if you could.

Yet another problem with this game is the annoying movies that come up at the beginning with the sponsors. Aspyr comes first with the music blaring about 2 times as loud as the sound in the game. You have to press escape about 7 times constantly to skip these movies. All they do is slow loading and make you mad. Another thing with loading is when you start the game, you get "Auto save is enabled." Well we already know that as you can't turn it off. This makes for more of a resemblance of PS2 that we'd rather not see.

In conclusion, the good part is pretty much the part of the game that matters. It probably won't matter very much if your prefs reset sometimes if you can play the game and enjoy it. Sure, maybe you can't use the command key to fire your cannon, but hey, why not just use a game pad?

The good parts in this game definitely make up for the bad parts. What would be more fun then barreling down a highway launching rockets at motorcycles and tanks going 200 mph? If you enjoy these things, then your sure to enjoy this great game.
