Using alien technologies, a military force has swept to power on Mars.
This totalitarian regime must be stopped and its robodroid armies destroyed. You
are an elite pilot in charge of a VacFighter, an experimental craft equipped
with both air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.
To successfully complete your mission
you will need to master your fighter and its weapons. New weapons, bonuses and
surprises will be available as you progress across the Martian battlefields!
Gameplay is quite simple.
Your VacFighter can be moved left, right, up and down by using the arrow keys.
Almost everything that appears on the screen is harmful to you, so practice dodging!
Unfortunately, dodging won't be enough.
You'll need to use more pro-active methods if you want to survive the oncoming horde!
Use your weapons to take out both airborne and ground-based enemies.
As you do so, you'll be rewarded with bonuses and coins which you can collect with your VacFighter.
Coins are tallied up at the end of each wave, increasing your score.
When you have accrued enough points, an extra VacFighter is awarded.
After you complete each level, the Research & Development team will install new, powerful weapons for your fighter.
Basics
Press the Fire Air Weapon key to release weapons that will deal with
airborne enemies. This key can be held down to power-up the weapon, emitting
a stream of destruction on release. Be careful not to overload it though!
Additional air-to-air weapons become available throughout your mission.
To cycle through these weapons, press the Select Air Weapon key.
To succeed in your mission you will need to master the art of changing weapons quickly and selecting the appropriate weapon for the target.
Pressing the Fire Ground Weapon key will launch Plasma Bombs.
These are used against ground-based installations and mobile enemies.
The crosshair will glow red whenever it is over an enemy.
This weapon automatically increases in power as you progress in your mission.

Using Gamepads and Joysticks with MacOS 8/9
When running in MacOS 8/9, Apple's InputSprocket is used to configure both your key settings and InputSprocket compatible game controllers.
To configure a gamepad or joystick for use with Deimos, plug the device in to your computer, then go to the Preferences option at the Deimos Rising main menu and press Set Controls....
Using Gamepads and Joysticks with Mac OS X
If you are running Mac OS X, you can configure your key settings and your gamepad settings separately.
To set keyboard commands, go to the Preferences option at the Deimos Rising main menu and press Set Controls... To configure a gamepad or joystick, plug the device into your computer, open the Preferences window and press Set Gamepad Controls...
If you are using an analog controller, Deimos will need to calibrate each axis before the VacFighter will respond properly.
This only needs to be done once, after which Deimos will remember the calibration.
To do this, just follow the instructions at the Gamepad Controls configuration window.
Using Keys
When playing via the keyboard be aware that there are limitations to the number of key presses that your machine can recognize at any one time.
We recommend that you assign some controls to modifier keys such as Command or Option.
A light tapping action works well.
If you experience any unexpected loss of inputs, try disconnecting any non-essential USB devices and start Deimos again.
To succeed in your mission you will need to master the art of changing weapons quickly and selecting the appropriate weapon for the target.
The following weapons will become available to you as you progress:
Ion Cannon
The default air weapon, it launches pairs of projectiles straight ahead of the VacFighter.
Useful for dealing with large numbers of lightly shielded enemies at a distance.
When powered up, it releases a formidable stream of projectiles that can cut a swathe through oncoming hordes.
Watch out that you don't overload it though!
Bacta Gun
A powerful weapon designed for close-range work, it fires an array of Bacta flares which spread out from the VacFighter.
This weapon is ideal for dealing with light-to-medium shielded enemies that have a fast horizontal movement.
Its short range also makes it a very useful money gathering tool as coins from enemy destruction will appear fairly close to the VacFighter.
The tradeoff is that the powerup is not especially powerful, although it is still very effective at short range.
Rear Gun
A tactical weapon with a dual action.
In normal firing mode, this gun fires pairs of projectiles to the front and the rear of the VacFighter!
Ideal for those enemies that manage to get behind you!
Also, the projectiles are rated for use against more heavily shielded targets, allowing you to cut through the strongest robodroid armour.
When powered up, it launches Plasma Drones which hover for a short period, wreaking havoc on any enemy who strays too close to them.
They can be used to lay traps for oncoming enemies, or be used as a defensive screen.
Photon Beam
An extremely powerful weapon featuring high velocity, high-energy projectiles that will obliterate all but the toughest Martian foes.
Note that unlike all the other weapons, the powerup for this weapon cannot be overloaded, and has a much larger storage capacity.
You can thus hold and unleash a stream of blistering energy without fear of self destruction!

![[Drone Base]](images/Ground_Units/TurbiniumDroneBase.gif) |
Turbinium Base
Intel doesn't have much of a dossier on this little number.
Nobody has ever engaged it in combat and reported back to tell the tale.
Do us a favor, and be the first, okay? |

Buzzsaw Mk I
Grunts spawned by the thousands in the underground robodroid autofacs.
With a small electronic brain, they're tactically primitive and easily dispatched even by rookie VacPilots. |

SuperCobra Gunship
A versatile and nimble opponent, the Supercobra has a habit of finding your blind spots and appearing where least expected.
Although not heavily armored, it's smart, and dangerous in numbers. |
90 |
![[Screw Mk I]](images/Air_Units/ScrewMkI.gif) |
Screw Mk I
The Screw is a pretty lousy attacker. Only the most inexperienced VacPilots will fall prey to it's one-shot wave motion gun.
However, it attacks in numbers and is very good at keeping you busy while other robodroids move in for the kill! |
80 |
![[Screw Mk II]](images/Air_Units/ScrewMkII.gif) |
Screw Mk II
This model has a few more tricks than its predecessor.
Not only can it fire in two directions at once, but repeatedly, and Intel reports that Screws in attack formation have been spotted, so watch out! |
80 |
![[Screw Mk III]](images/Air_Units/ScrewMkIII.gif) |
Screw Mk III
Those cybernetic boffins down in the robodroid labs have added a new twist to their Screw:
the wave motion gun has been adapted to launch high-energy Gravity Drones! |

Gravity Drones
Alien technology in small packages equals hurt central.
They'll interfere with your flying and soak up your weapon fire.
We suggest you take out the Screws before they can launch these things. |

NeoBaccula Defense Shield
It's unknown whether this flying shield can be destroyed.
What is certain, however, is that your VacFighter will be instant toast if you make contact. |

Scoring
- Destroyed enemies will release one or more coins, which will flit around for a short period before disappearing.
Grab these coins with your VacFighter and they will be tallied up at the end of each level, and converted to points.
Each coin is worth more as you progress through the levels so collecting coins on later levels can be very lucrative!
In general, try to grab every coin you can, but not at the expense of a VacFighter.
- If your VacFighter is destroyed, all the coins that you have collected in that level will be released, so be quick and grab them all again when you reappear.
It is considered rude to steal the coins of your fellow player.
(But, boy, is it fun!)
- The color and size of the coin represents its value, with a small silver coin having the smallest worth, and a large gold coin worth oodles!
- Some enemies, most notably ground units, will also release Score Powerups, which will instantly increase your score if you touch them.
- You can have up to 10 VacFighters, including the one in use.
You get a free VacFighter at the first 10,000 points, then 30,000 points.
After that, each new craft is progressively harder to get, and you'll need another 30,000 points, then another 40,000, and so on.
- To reset the high scores, hold down the Option key and click on the Scores button.
Levels
- The game will remember the highest level that you have fully completed, but only if you start the game from the first level (Mariner Valley).
You can select which level you'd like to start from, up to and including this highest level, from the level selection screen.
However, be aware that if you start at a higher level, you start with only one VacFighter, the game does not count for high scores and the game will not remember the highest level achieved.
Special Bonuses
- To fully complete the game and qualify for the End of Mission bonus sequence, you must have started from Mariner Valley.
- Destroying all hostile ground targets in a level qualifies you for the 100% Ground Accuracy Bonus.
Extra Life bunkers are not included in this count, so don't be too upset if you miss those bunkers as you won't be penalized for it.
- Achieving 100% Ground Accuracy in all levels will qualify you for a massive bonus on completion of the game.
It's worth it!
- There are secret ground targets ripe for the bombing in all levels, which can release Shield Powerups, coins and other treasure!
No bonuses are hidden in flat, uninteresting areas.
(Psst, think Yellowstone!
Geysers may be pretty, but they emit noxious, ozone-depleting chemicals.
Be environmentally friendly and bomb them!)
- Completing a level without suffering any damage will earn a Shield Bonus.
This award increases in value as you progress through the levels.
Note that taking damage and recharging via a Shield Powerup will not qualify you for this bonus.
Combat
- Use breaks in the action to power-up your air weapon.
Many enemies will cluster together and a well timed weapon release will take out many of your opponents at once.
- If an enemy fires salvos at you, you can often lead its projectiles away from you by feinting in one direction and then pulling back in another.
- Pressing down while the VacFighter is at the bottom of the screen will cause the bomb crosshair to drop down towards the VacFighter.
This is good for hitting any pesky ground targets that may slip by you.
- To succeed, you will need to master the art of firing at air enemies and bombing ground targets at the same time.
Configure your controls so that you can comfortably hold down the Fire Air Weapon control (for weapon powering-up) while also hammering the Fire Ground Weapon key.
If you have to constantly switch between firing at air targets and ground targets, the robodroids will always win.
- Be sure to use the right weapon for the job.
For each level that you play, your Plasma Bomb launcher is automatically upgraded for you, but you will need to select which air weapon to use at any given time.
The Ion Cannon is a good, basic tool but you'll need to use the other weapons as they become available.
Good VacPilots can quickly switch between the different weapons, and know where each is best used.
- Sometimes caution is the name of the game.
Many of the ground enemies have certain detection ranges within which they can lock on to your VacFighter.
If you are hurting, or simply want to priorities your targets, you can often hang back and deal with one set of enemies while staying out of range of another.
- If there is a series of peek-a-boo ground targets, they usually don't open up all at once, but in sequence.
Try and note the sequence so you can wait in ambush for the first one after they've all fired off their first volley.
- Radars will release random bonuses when destroyed, but they also have another purpose:
alerting other forces that you are within range, causing the bad guys to activate.
So if you're hurting, you may want to avoid allowing a radar to lock on to you.
- Shenobi Assault Mines aren't as hard as they look.
Well, okay, they are, but they're not invincible.
Though faster than your VacFighter, they are not quite as agile.
Trying to outrun one in any given direction will just land you in a World Of Pain.
So don't.
Instead, try rapid changes in direction and keep shooting.
- In general, stay loose.
Directing the enemy movements and firing sequences by moving your VacFighter around, and timing your attacks, is usually far more lucrative (and easier on your wrists and fingers!) than just blasting away.
Penalties
- The War Crime penalty applies when you bomb a hospital.
Sadly, as has often been the case throughout the history of warfare, your opponents have no problems with conducting their operations next to a hospital.
So be careful about where you place those bombs!
For the best performance, run Deimos Rising in fullscreen mode.
This is the default setting, and it can be set from the Preferences window.
(Note that you will have to relaunch Deimos Rising for the changes to take effect.
You can also bring up the Preferences window as you launch Deimos Rising by holding down the Option key.)
If you are running in windowed mode in Mac OS X, you should ensure that your display is set to thousands of colors for the best results.
If the game runs too slowly, try enabling the Interlaced Video mode in the Preferences window (or press the F6 key during a game).
This will cause a slight reduction in drawing quality, but it should help speed the game up.
For the best results, pause or quit other processor intensive applications while playing Deimos Rising.
If using an external display device such as a television or second monitor, the device should be plugged in to your Macintosh before launching Deimos Rising.
Cheat codes are available to owners of the full game, to provide a little help.
All the codes have usage limits, as they're designed to help you get through the game, not remove the challenge or the surprises.
To enable the cheat system:
- start a 1 or 2 Player game,
- activate the game console by pressing the tilde (~) key,
- type supermunki, and press Return.
This only needs to be done once, as the game will remember that cheating has been enabled.
Note that if you cheat, that game will not count towards a high score!
To use one of the following codes, simply activate the game console again, and type in the code.
